If you favor old buildings and supporting local retailers, we have a suggestion that will also satisfy your seasonal sweet tooth. Welcome to Ghyslain, a Richmond bistro operated by the noted chocolatier. (Ghyslain Maurais, from Quebec, married Susan and they started out and still operate a chocolate shop in her hometown of Union City, Indiana.)
The sumptuous French cuisine, available for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday (lunch only on Sunday), merits a trip, but it’s OK if you go for the desserts alone. Ghyslain’s arsenal of hand-painted artisanal chocolates, French pastries and gelato enslaves helpless taste buds. The gourmet sweets, which during the holidays include seasonal favorites like eggnog truffles and chocolate snowmen, are also available in the attached boutique, and make perfect holiday gifts. You could buy some to leave with a glass of milk for Santa (if you possess the willpower to save them for the big guy).
The bistro offers an industrially chic environment—a 1904 warehouse in the historic Depot District, where there are other opportunities for holiday shopping and sightseeing. Definitely worth a trip to Richmond.
